The History Behind Elmet
The history of Elmet is quite vague, yet there is enough to both interest and whet the appetite to look deeper.
Some see history as they wish and then go on to explain it that way. We say it as best we can and as truthfully as possible. The story will change as more is discovered, which excites us, so we wait in expectation.
Information regarding Elmet's history is thin, and most of what can be argued as probable comes from Bede, Welsh Poetry, Ceaser and the Anglo-Saxon chronicles. All else is ephemeral, but the land helps, and its story is told through buildings, place names, archaeology, and, of course, the people: Ancient settlers of the British Isles, Pre-Celtic, Celtic - Brythonic, Angles, Frysian, Norse and today's settlers who become themselves Elmeteans.
If you feel you have relevant and verified (as best it can ever be) information and discoveries, we'd love to hear from you.
We would be especially keen to hear anything regarding descriptions of the remains of a Manor house discovered in a basement in a house in Ledsham, believed to be from the time of Elmet.
